SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------
Solar activity was very low. No flares were observed in
the last 24 hours.
Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low.
The geomagnetic field ranged from unsettled to major storm
levels. The last 24 hours have been typical of the last two
days: mostly minor storm levels at mid-latitudes with periods
of major storm at high latitudes were observed from 02/2100Z
through about 1200Z; conditions declined to unsettled levels
with active periods at high latitudes for the remainder of the
period.
STD: Electrons at greater than 2 MeV have again become
enhanced. The enhancement began roughly near 14:00 UTC.
Electrons approached or reached high levels at geosynchronous
altitudes at about 20:00 UTC. Based on recurrence, this
disturbance may last through to 16 or 17 May. Overall fluence
levels were moderate.
Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to persist over the next three days in a similar
pattern to today. Generally active conditions with periods of
storming are likely during local nighttimes and unsettled to
active conditions are expected during the daytime hours.

HF propagation conditions continued below normal for high
and polar latitude signal paths. Middle latitude paths
experienced periodic below-normal propagation with slightly
below-normal daytime propagation. MUFs from the polar to
middle latitude paths have been depressed between 15 and 35
percent. Conditions are expected to continue below-normal
throughout at least the next 72 hours.

All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.
Acronyms used to identify sweeps and optical phenomena include:
II = Type II Sweep Frequency Event
III = Type III Sweep
IV = Type IV Sweep

Continuum = Continuum Radio Event
Loop = Loop Prominence System,
Spray = Limb Spray,
Surge = Bright Limb Surge,
EPL = Eruptive Prominence on the Limb.

I have three Heil headsets. Two of the open-air style jobs, one with the
#4 and one with the #5. I also have the newer closed-style headset with
the #5 element. I think overall, I like the #5, even for contesting.
I typically run about 10 dB of compression, and it seems that with
the compression on, that the wider frequency response element is more
noticible in a pileup. Maybe it lacks the (industry buzzword follows)
"punch" that the DX element has, but from what I hear listening to myself
on the monitor and on the DVR, I like the #5 better. Rig on this end is
also a TS-940.

While in Dayton I visited Mendelson Electronics (800-344-4465). They had
dozens of large sinks. As a surplus supply, meeting some exact specs would
be too difficult. I bet, however, the request for a "large heatsink about
19 by 24 by 4" would yield a price.

Yes, you can. My old impact license was set to expire in 1998, but I
wanted a good looking laser-printed license, so I sent in for a renewal.
This was two years ago when I did thig. I recieved back a great looking
license with a new expiration date set for Feb. 14, 2002.
Just send in a 610, a copy of your current license, and check the box
that says "renew" license.

I have a couple of questions on recip. licensing. My wife will be
travelling on business to England this summer and wondered if she should
take her hand held with her? She is a tech plus. What arrangements
does she have to make to do so and will her radio (2 meter) cover the
frequencies/shifts/tones used in the U. K.?
Second question. We are probably going to charter a sailboat in the
Virgin Is. this summer and the same question comes up. How do we
get recip. licensing privleges in the Brit. Virgin Is. ??
Thanks,

That rose may be a weed if it's in the middle of the garden, but if you
look at the entire garden from afar, you won't be able to tell it's out of
place.
>
> I have nothing against this posting except that it has nothing to do with

A valid inquiry, and one that deserves an answer. Now don't take this
personally, but there are others who aren't as mature here. After having
been flamed in the past for off topic material, I am not waiting to go on
the defensive, I am taking the bull by the horns. It's not intended for
you, but for some others who haven't spoken up yet, or those that did, and
I didn't get their replys. (Our sysadmin decided to knock off a few
hackers so they letter bombed our spool and we lost a couple of megs of
mail, undoubtidly a few KB's were mine).
My weekly comentaries on Spectrum will deal with all aspects of
communication. Because of the cross interest most Hams have, and the
posability of not everyone who is interested having access to all the
newsgroups, I will crosspost them here. If you have a good reader, you
will only see it once. But if you check r.r.a.misc first, it will only seem
like it's in the wrong place whenever the commentary has nothing to do with
amateur radio.
I see no objections to my posting of Newsline each week? (Actually, I
don't post it directly to avoid duplication, Mark automatically crossposts
when I submit it to him for r.r.info). What if I tagged my comment on to
Newsline? I bet there would be no complaints then.
I'm not allowed to add to, subtract from, or alter the Newsline text, and I
made that rule. But if I did, and put a header or disclaimer that it
wasn't part of Newsline, there would still be people who wouldn't realize
it, simply because they don't read. The first line of each posting lists
Bill, WA6ITF, as the publisher, so why did I get a letter today asking if I
was the publisher? If the header says send your comments to Bill, then
why do I get comments? Why did a Ham on another net who openly reprinted
"digipeater rabbit", GIVING FULL CREDIT TO THE AUTHOR, get replys like,
"this is the best thing you ever wrote"?
The point is that if you see something YOU don't think should be here, read
it again. If you still don't get it, just remember there may be others that
do. So show some maturity, skip it and read something else. This is a NOT
your personal newsgroup, it is world wide and is read by to people who
may find it interesting.
Ranting and raving and, (if it's one of mine), flaming me isn't going to
make me stop, I already stated why and we're only talking about one message
a week. If you think you can stop anyone that way, then you are nothing
more than a censor. While we do need them to protect the morals of kids
and morons, those that try to censor ideas are lowest form of scum on the
earth.
As far as I'm concerned, the complaints have as much value as someone
saying he only has Icom in his shack and doesn't want to see anyone post
anything about Yeasu, Drake, Kenwood or whatever. They just make the
complainer look immature, close minded and stupid.
SPECTRUM is heard on WWCR/5810 Khz at 0300 UTC-Sunday/10PM Eastern,
Saturdays.

Subject: still looking for project ideas
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I am currently finishing my junior year in electrical engineering. Next year,
I will be working on a "senior project" with at least one other student.
Taking a look ahead, we're trying to figure out some options for projects that
we could do.
We'd like it to be in the are of electronics. Audio applications, signal
processing, waveform modification, signal generation, filtering, etc. I don't
know what else... so many different things, we hardly know where to start.
Other options that we'd like to consider are those in the communication
electronics area. We'll be having communic. theory and electronics classes
next year, so right now, we don't have much to go on in that area. I am an
amateur radio operator. Something dealing with that would be really great!
Other areas of interest that might generate a good project would me some
digital / electronics combination, applications dealing w/ transistors as
switching (not in a power situation, but rather small things).
This project lasts two semesters. In the fall we finalize our project. Write
up some designs, present the project, make a "project request" or something
like that. Then, by Dec., have it ready to put together. Starting in Jan., we
build a prototype, fix it, get it to work (ie. re-design and re-design and..).
Finally, we'll end the semester by writing final reports, documentation and
doing more presentations.
We'd like any ideas for projects that you think would be interesting,
obtainable, and fit the idea of this "senior project."
___PLEASE____ if you've got any ideas, send some email to me. Just give us a
couple of ideas that you might have. I'll post a summery to the list if I get
some responses.
